What is sublimation printing?

Sublimation printing involves using sublimation paper and high-quality ink to transfer a digital design onto a surface.

During this process, the ink turns from a solid to a gaseous state, bypassing the liquid phase, and adhering to the surface.

This results in vibrant colors and durable prints on various substrates, including glass tumblers.

Can you sublimate on glass cups?

Yes, you can sublimate on glass cups, but it requires some extra steps compared to sublimating on other surfaces like ceramic mugs. Here’s what you need:

  1. Glass sublimation tumblers or glass mugs with a special coating for sublimation.
  2. Sublimation coating for glass surfaces, if you’re using regular glass cups.
  3. Sublimation transfer paper for printing your digital designs.
  4. A heat press machine or a convection oven for applying heat.
  5. Heat-resistant tape to secure the design in place.
  6. A lint roller and butcher paper to prep the glass surface.
  7. A heat gun or shrink wrap to cover the entire design area.

Step-by-step guide for sublimating on glass cups

  1. Create your design using graphic design software like Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator, and print it on sublimation transfer paper with Epson sublimation ink or another high-quality ink.
  2. Use a lint roller to clean the glass surface, removing any dust or debris.
  3. Apply the sublimation coating to the glass surface if necessary, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Secure the printed design onto the glass cup with heat-resistant tape, ensuring it’s properly aligned and wrinkle-free.
  5. Cover the entire design area with shrink wrap or use a heat gun to create a tight seal, protecting the design during the heating process.
  6. Place the glass cup in the heat press machine or you can also sublimate glass in a convection oven and follow the recommended temperature and time settings for glass sublimation (usually around 400°F for 12-15 minutes).
  7. Carefully remove the glass cup from the heat source, using heat-resistant gloves, and allow it to cool to room temperature.
  8. Peel off the transfer paper and tape, revealing your beautiful sublimated design on the glass cup!

Sounds like the water is too hot on the sanitize setting. Try hand washing or use a setting that doesn't get as hot.
