What are sublimation designs?
Sublimation is a method of printing that transfers a design onto a material using ink in a high heating process.
Understanding how sublimation works helps you understand how to reverse the process and clean up your mistakes.
How Do You Remove Sublimation
Sublimation ink designs are great for making custom mugs, but if you make a mistake on it you need to know if and how it can be removed. Can you save and reuse the mug?
Let’s say you have a mug with sublimation lettering that you want to remove and replace with another design.
It may seem like the design is permanent, but there is an easy way to remove most sublimation from mugs with supplies that you already have at home.
You can try any of the following different methods.
1. Sponge Method
If you’ve ever made a sublimation mistake, you know that it can be really annoying. Especially after you spent all that time carefully placing the design on the mug before sticking it in the mug press.
You might try rubbing alcohol or even bleach, but these chemicals will only make things worse. Instead, use a dry sponge to scrub away the ink. Scrub using firm pressure. Once all of the ink is completely gone, rinse the mug with a little bit of dish soap and running cold water.
There may be some scratches on the mug surface after using this method. The scratches could make it hard to reuse the mug for another project. So proceed with caution.
Vinegar Pre-Soak
There’s no need to soak the area in white or apple cider vinegar before scrubbing it. Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Repeat as needed.
2. Sandpaper Method
If the ink still won’t come out, try scrubbing it instead with a dry piece of lightweight sandpaper. You don’t need to apply much pressure to get the job done.
If you’re not getting the results you want, try wetting the sandpaper before scrubbing the remaining ink. Then rinse the mug off in soapy water and wipe it off with a clean cloth.
3. Convection Oven Method
Since high heat is used to do sublimation printing, it only makes sense that you can also use it to remove a design.
Place the mug in a convection or toaster oven. Turn it on to high heat and place the mug inside. You may need 30 – 60 minutes to fade the existing design from the mug.
Try 30 minutes and check on the progress. If it’s not yet faded enough, place the mug back in the oven for another 15 minutes.
The key is that the oven should have a way to distribute heat around the oven and not just in one direction like in a regular oven.
This method best works as an alternative to harsh chemicals like hydrogen peroxide or nail polish remover because you’re not directly breathing in those fumes for a long time. However, make sure not to do this in a well-ventilated room.
Definitely DO NOT mix any of these liquids to clean the mug otherwise you’ll end up with a bad chemical reaction.

I used the sponge and white vinegar method on my sublimated mug which is actual a real sublimated mug I purchased from Michaels Craft store. I couldn't get the ink off so I used a fine dry sandpaper after dipping it in the white vinegar, it did come off with light pressure. It left a very light yellow tint to the mug when I rinsed with Coldwater, is it safe to re-sublimate another image over top of what I just removed?

Sure Lisa, you can re-sublimate the mug. I have some tips on how to do that in my post called This is How Long to Sublimate a Tumbler in a Convection Oven.
