How Does Sublimation Work: Easy 6-Step Shortcuts for Beginners
Have you ever seen a beautiful piece of fabric with a stunning design and wondered how it was made? The answer is sublimation printing. So how does the sublimation process work?
This process uses heat to transfer dye onto a substrate, such as cloth or paper. The design is printed onto a special sublimation transfer paper with a special ink-jet sublimation printer. The substrate (also known as sublimation blanks) is then placed on top of the transfer paper and heated to high temperatures. The solid dye turns into a gaseous state and transfers onto the substrate.
In this blog post, I will discuss the process of sublimation printing in detail and show you how to create your designs.

What Do You Need for Sublimation Printing?
To do sublimation printing, you will need the following:
- Special Sublimation Inkjet Printer
- Sublimation Paper
- Heat press machine
- Sublimation Blanks (polyester fabric, mugs, etc.)
- Dye sublimation ink (sublimation dyes)
I get commissions for purchases made through some of the links in this post. There is no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure here.
Once you have these materials, you are ready to start sublimation printing.
How Does Sublimation Work Step by Step?
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do sublimation printing:
Step One: Create Your Design
For you to transfer your design onto the blank, you will need to create it first. You can do this using a graphics program such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Make sure that the colors of your design are reversed (light colors become dark and vice versa).
Step Two: Print Your Design Onto Transfer Paper
Once you have designed your image, you can print it onto the special sublimation transfer paper. You will need to use a dye sublimation printer and special inks that are specifically designed for this. Some brands like Epson printer are made just for this method of printing.
Step Three: Select the Proper Settings
The heat press settings will depend on the substrate that you are using. You should consult your manufacturer’s instructions for the correct settings for each material. Once you have set the temperature, time, and pressure, you will be ready to start printing.
Step Four: Place Your Substrate and Special Transfer Paper into the Heat Press
You should place your substrate onto the transfer paper, ensuring the design is facing up. Secure it in place with the heat press and apply pressure to ensure a proper transfer.
Step Five: Apply Heat
The time and temperature of your heat press will vary depending on your substrate. The heat will cause the solid dye to turn into gas, which is then transferred onto the substrate.
Step Six: Remove the Substrate and the Transfer Paper
Once the transfer is complete, you can remove the substrate from the heat press. Carefully peel off the transfer paper and discard it. Your sublimation print is now complete!
What Kind of T-Shirts Work with Sublimation
T-shirts are popular for making sublimation projects. But, not all types of fabrics work.
For example, cotton shirts won’t give you the best results. The printed design needs to combine with the fabric. The pores of the fabric in natural fibers will take the ink in its liquid phase instead of going directly to a solid form.
The chemical process is better suited for sublimation transfers on polyester t-shirts.
Can you use Infusible Ink on cotton?
There is a way to use infusible ink on cotton to make the sublimation printing process work. If you really want to do dye-sublimation printing on cotton shirts, you can use infusible ink combined with clear glitter htv.
How Long Does Infusible Ink Last on Shirts?
Infusible Ink will last a long time on shirts because the ink becomes a part of the fabric. So the printed image will stay on as long as the shirt holds up.
Different Products That You Can Sublimate On?
The following items will work with the dye sublimation printing process.
- phone cases
- t-shirts (white or black shirts)
- coffee mugs
- mouse pads
- puzzles
- glass tumblers
Final Thoughts
Sublimation printing is a great way to create beautiful designs on various blanks.
By following the steps outlined above, and using the right sublimation supplies, you can achieve stunning results with sublimation printing.
With a little practice, you will be able to create your own unique designs in no time at all and maybe even turn them into a profitable business.
I hope this blog post has been helpful in showing you how to do sublimation printing.
