How to Draw a Cute Dog – Easy Steps

Let’s start by gathering your materials to draw the dog.

Drawing Supplies

Digital Drawing Supplies

iPad

Apple pencil

Procreate

Paper Drawing Supplies

Drawing pencil

Drawing Paper

Art markers or Colored Pencils

Light Table for Tracing (optional)

I like to use Procreate or Inkscape to make my easy cartoon drawings.

Inkscape is an open-source graphic software.  Which means it’s free to use and Procreate is a paid app. Sometimes, I use an online Inkscape drawing app if I’m not at my home computer.

I’ll use Procreate for this drawing.

Draw a Cute Dog Step by Step

For the first step, we’re going to make a wide upside-down u shape, followed by a wider circle just below that. I want it to look more like an oval than a circle.

This will give him a little more character.

Next, I’ll draw vertical lines going down from his head to make his legs. I’ll do the same thing on the other side.

You can see his body starting to form.

Draw a small curve on the left side and then a small curve on the right side.

Next, I’ll draw a small line between the legs to complete the body.

Draw the Dog Tail

I’ll draw the dog’s tails using two quick lines on the right side of the body. I think it’s better to keep it nice and simple.

How to Draw a Dog Face

Let’s make a face for the dog.

Technically, the ears aren’t part of the face but I like to draw them at the same time as the face for this tutorial.

Since this is a big dog, his ears take up a lot of space and add to the personality of the face.

Draw the ears by making a curvy-shaped line, down then up on one side of the head, and then the same on the other side of the head.

See the picture below.

Now, I’m ready to add the other facial features like his eyes, nose, and tongue.

Draw a small circle on the left and a small circle on the right side of the dog head.

These are the eyes.

Draw an upside-down triangle in the middle of the head for the dog nose.

Right under the nose, draw a vertical line that goes down and curves to the left and draw the same in the other direction.

Make a little U shape just under here. This is the tongue.

The dog drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.

Coloring the Dog Drawing

You’re ready to color your drawing of a dog.

To do this, use the color drop method. Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps).

The color drop method just means that you touch the color at the top right and drag it to the section that you want to color.

Choose another color from the color wheel and click on a section of the dog to fill it with color.

Repeat this process to color in the entire drawing.
