How to Draw a Fox – Video Tutorial

Foxes are known to be sly and cunning. But I’ll show you how to draw a fox that’s absolutely adorable in this step-by-step video tutorial. 

You’ll be ready to color this drawing in just a few minutes. I’ve also added lots of ideas for crafts that you can make with this fox drawing.

This simple technique uses just a few steps to make the drawing of a fox, we’ll start by drawing the basic round shape to make the head, then add the body, the ears, and a cute little tail.

This short tutorial can be done by both digital and traditional methods. This means that you can use a digital drawing tablet or a pencil and paper.  

If you’re looking for cartoon animal drawings, then this is a good place to start. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to upload your finished drawing to your cutting machine and cut a template using the outline of the simple fox drawing.

The best part of drawing digitally is that you can replicate your drawing really fast. Most digital software programs have a copy and paste function so that you can just duplicate the first fox that you made and move them around the canvas any way that you like.

Another way to add a touch of personality to your drawing is by adding text to it. To personalize your drawing, you can add a name just under the fox. Here are three ways that you can add text to your drawing.

How to Draw an Easy Fox

Let’s start by gathering your materials to draw the fox. 

Drawing Supplies

Digital Drawing Supplies

iPad

Apple pencil

Procreate

Paper Drawing Supplies

Drawing pencil

Drawing Paper

Art markers or Colored Pencils

Light Table for Tracing (optional)

My favorite digital drawing program is Inkscape because it uses vectors. Vectors give you a clean sharp drawing even if you shrink or enlarge it. 

But for this drawing, I’m using Procreate. Procreate is a drawing program that works on IOS for Ipad.

Draw a Fox Step by Step

For the first step, we’re going to make a round shape with three points on the left side and on the right side.

Procreate is slowly becoming my go-to drawing app. It has features like the warp function, which lets you contort a shape or section of your drawing. 

I used this function to reshape the head.

Next, I’ll draw the collar by making a vertical line down from the left side of the head, then draw 6 points up and down, going from left to right. To close the collar, I’ll draw a vertical line up the right side of the head.

Draw Fox Legs

To make the legs of the fox, draw a line from the bottom of the collar, going down, make a small curve, then draw a line back up to close the leg. Repeat this step on the other side.

Draw the ears by making a U-shaped line, up and then down on one side of the top of the head and then the same on the other side of the head.

How to Draw the Body of the Fox

Now we’ll draw the body of the fox. This might seem tricky but it’s not. 

Draw a line going down from the left side of the collar, then two points, and then a large curve towards the leg. Repeat this step on the right side, then draw a line between the legs to connect the two sides. Now you’ve drawn the fox body.

How to Draw a Fox Face

Let’s make a face for the fox.

Draw an arch on the left and an arch on the right side of the fox head.

Under each arch, draw a small circle.

These are the eyes.

Since the fox has fur all over, we’ll draw a zig zag line from each arch to represent where the fur changes.

Draw an upside-down triangle in the middle of the head for the fox nose. Draw a small curved line under the nose to give him a smile.

Draw an upside-down triangle on the left side of the head and another triangle slightly above this one.

Repeat this step on the right side.

Draw the Fox Tail

Draw a furry little fox tail using a few simple strokes.

The fox drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.

Coloring the Fox Drawing

You’re ready to color your drawing of a fox.

To do this, use the color drop method. 

Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps). 

If you have gaps, double click on the gap, zoom in and pull the nodes to close the gap. 

Click on a color from the color menu bar, then drag it to where you want to drop it.  I’ll choose a few shades of orange and brown.

Repeat this process of clicking and dropping to color in every section of the fox.

Color Tips

If you are making a digital drawing, make sure to close any gaps. This will make it easier to color the drawing using the color drop tool.
