Many ceramic artists use clay. As a beginner, you can test out bisque ceramics. These are ceramic items that have been fired but are unpainted and ready to decorate.
You can use acrylic, latex, or alcohol ink to paint ceramics.
Nope. While you can use acrylic paint for ceramics it’s not the same as ceramic paint. Ceramic paint is a water-based paint that is specially made for painting decorative surfaces, which includes ceramics, china, and glass.
Glaze
This is the most important part of any painting project. You need to use a glaze that will adhere to the clay and protect it from cracking or chipping.
There are two main types of glazes: matte and glossy.
Matte glazes are more durable than glossy ones, but they tend to be less shiny.
Glossy glazes are easier to apply and clean up, but they are not as durable.
Ceramic Blanks
Ready-to-paint blanks save you time and are an easy way to make decorative pieces. You can find them for small or large projects.
Paint
Any paint will work as long as it’s water-based. Most paints come in a variety of colors so you can easily match any color scheme you choose.
I recommend using ceramic paint over acrylic paint because even though acrylic paint dries quickly and has a smooth finish, ceramic paint diluted with water has a translucent effect.
Once the paint is dry, cure the project using a standard household oven for 30mins at 284ºF (140ºC).
Brushes
A good brush is essential for creating smooth lines and details.
You will need a wide brush with bristles that are at least 1/2 inch (13mm) apart. This allows you to cover large areas without having to dip into the paint repeatedly. If you use a smaller brush, you will have to dip into the paint more often.
Storage Containers
There are several ways to store your supplies. One method is to use sturdy stackable plastic containers that will fit on a shelf. This is the easiest way to store them if you don’t have a lot of space. Another option is to use a cabinet with wheels or a craft desk. The wheels make it simple to roll away the cabinet when it’s not in use.
