How to Draw a Carrot

One of the first things you learn to draw in art class is a bowl of fruit. That’s great if you want to know how to draw an apple, but what about it you want to know how to draw a carrot?

It’s Bug’s bunny’s favorite food, you need one to build a snowman and rumor has it that they help you see better in the dark. You’re probably going to want to know how to draw vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and radishes.  In this post, I’ll show you my method for how to make a carrot drawing

I get commissions for purchases made through some of the links in this post. There is no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure here.

This simple technique is easy enough for anyone to follow. This tutorial can be done with a digital drawing tablet or with just a pencil and paper.

If you’re into crafting, you’ll be able to upload your finished drawing to Cricut and make a carrot cut file. This would be cute for Easter bunny crafts, baby nursery decorations and spring theme DIY gifts.

Print and cut is an even easier option on your Cricut machine. You can use the carrot coloring sheet to make a print and cut design.

It’s a great project for beginner artists. For extra help, you can print the instructions and the template below. By following this tutorial and watching the video, you’ll learn how to draw a cartoon carrot.

Why is digital drawing harder than paper drawing?

When you’re first starting out, you might find digital drawing harder than paper drawing.

This is pretty normal.

Making digital drawings can seem complicated because it’s new to you and you’re not used to drawing with a mouse or a tablet.

That’s why I created the So Simple SVG course. It’s a self-paced online video course, where you’ll learn how to make easy digital vector drawings.

Tools You Need for an Easy Carrot Drawing

Let’s start by gathering your materials to draw the carrot.

Drawing Supplies

Digital Drawing Supplies & Paper Drawing Supplies

Drawing Supplies

Here is a list of drawing supplies. The first set is for drawing in the traditional method on paper.

The last set is for digital drawing.

Digital Art Supplies

Inkscape software program

Computer

Graphic tablet (optional)

I like to use Inkscape which is an open-source graphic software program.  If you prefer to work on a tablet, there is even an online drawing app version of Inkscape.

There are lots of other drawing programs that you can use, like Adobe and Corel. I started out with Inkscape and I find it easy to use once you get the hang of it. Like with anything, there’s a learning curve.

Inkscape Settings

I stick with the same tools and settings to make drawings in Inkscape. I find the calligraphy and brush strokes tool to work best for this.

The reason that I like the calligraphy tool is that, once you tweak the settings, the lines that you get look more like a pen or pencil lines than if you were to use the pen tool.

You can find the settings that I use in the instruction sheet at the bottom of the post.

If you’re making the digital version, make sure that your settings on the calligraphy tool match mine before starting. Otherwise, you’ll get sharp slanted edges on your lines, which is the default setting on the calligraphy tool.

Draw a Carrot Step by Step

To get started, we’ll draw a triangle to serve as our guide.

If you’re using a pencil and paper, make sure to draw your guidelines lightly. This means that you should use gentle pressure to make them.

The reason for this is because we’re going to remove the guidelines once we’re done drawing the carrot outline.

For digital artists, choose one bright color (I’ll use red) to make the guideline.  The reason we’re using only one bright color is that we’re going to delete the guidelines at once when we finish drawing the carrot.

I’ve got a neat little trick to show you how to do this.

Next, draw an upside-down triangle shape as your guide, using the bright color that you chose.

Pro Tip: If you need help, print the template and instruction sheet below and watch the full video tutorial.

The next step is to change the color to a darker color, like black. Since we’re done with the guidelines, we don’t need the red color anymore.

Now let’s draw the carrot shape using 3 curved lines.

Draw a curved line on the right side of the triangle.

Repeat this step two more times as you go down the triangle.

Then, draw a curved line on the left side of the triangle.

Repeat this step two more times as you go down the triangle.

The curved lines will serve as the sections of the carrot.

Now we’re going to make the ridges of the carrot. We’ll use the indents from the curved lines as a guide for where to draw the ridges.

Draw a short curved line at each indent. You’ll want to vary the sizes of the curved lines. This gives the carrot a more realistic look.

You’re now ready to move on to the next step, erasing the guidelines.

How to delete drawing guidelines

Digital instructions to remove guidelines

To delete the drawing guidelines, click on the bright red guideline (anywhere on the guideline is fine).

You’ll know that it’s selected when you see red appear in the color menu bar at the bottom of your screen.

Right-click on the mouse and choose “Select same fill color”. All of the red guidelines will be selected. Now, click on delete to remove all of the guidelines at once.

Paper and pencil instructions to remove guidelines

To remove the drawing guidelines on paper, you just need to erase the triangle. Hopefully, you took my advice and didn’t draw your pencil guidelines too hard.

Draw a Carrot Stem

The base of the carrot is complete, let’s add the stem.

To draw the carrot stem, we’ll make 2 sets of parallel curved lines at the top center of the carrot.

Draw a Carrot Leaf

Once you’re done with the stem, you’re ready to draw the leaves on top of the stems.

To draw a five-sided leaf, we’ll use one continuous line with 2 bumps on the left, one bump at the top and two bumps on the right. These are the same leaves used in the how to draw a pumpkin video.

Make veins in the leaf by drawing a vertical line inside the middle of the leaf. Now add 2 diagonal lines on each side of the line that you just drew.

Continue to draw another leaf on top of the right stem.

This carrot drawing can be used to draw a snowman since you already know how to draw a carrot nose.

Coloring the Carrot Drawing

You’re ready to color your drawing of the carrot.

To do this, use the fill bucket tool (fill bounded areas tool). Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps).

If you have gaps, double click on the gap, zoom in and pull the nodes to close the gap. Watch the video to see how I did this.

Click the fill bucket tool and then click on a color from the color menu bar at the bottom of the screen.  Next, click on a section of the carrot to fill it with color.

Repeat this process to color in every section of the carrot, the stem, and the leaves.

Click on a section, and then click the send to back tool to put the color behind the outline. Basically, you want the outline to sit on top of the colored sections.

You’ve mastered drawing a carrot. Do you like it?!
