How to Draw a Palm Tree – Video Tutorial

This is such an easy tutorial to draw a palm tree. You’ll be ready to color this drawing in just a few minutes. Plus you’ll find ideas for crafts that you can make with this palm tree drawing. 

This short tutorial can be done by both digital and traditional methods. This means that you can use a digital drawing tablet or a pencil and paper.

How to Draw an Easy Palm Tree

Let’s start by gathering your materials to draw the palm tree.

iPad

Apple pencil

Procreate

Paper Drawing Supplies

Art markers or Colored Pencils

Light Table for Tracing (optional)

I like to use Inkscape to make my easy cartoon drawings. Inkscape is my favorite open-source graphic software.  The term open-source means it’s free to use. Sometimes, I use Procreate or Affinity Designer too. Since I love digital drawing, I like learning and trying different drawing apps.

We’ll use Procreate for this tutorial. The full step-by-step instruction sheet is at the bottom of the post. 

If you’re new to digital drawing, don’t be afraid to make the digital version. The steps are short and simple to follow.

Draw a Palm Tree Step by Step

For the first step, we’re going to make the trunk. 

Draw a curved line, then another curved line, and connect them with a small horizontal curved line.

See the picture below.

I’ll make a crosshatch design for the trunk. Go ahead and draw diagonal curved lines going from left to right, then diagonal curved lines from right to left, inside the trunk.

Now you can color the trunk. To do this, add a new layer then re-draw the outline of the trunk.

How to Draw Palm Tree Leaves

To make the leaves, draw a line that starts at the top of the left side of the trunk, going away from the trunk to a point, and then back toward the middle.

Don’t draw the line all the way to the middle. You want to leave some space to draw the coconuts.

Continue making the in and out lines up and around the top until you get to the right side.

How to Draw Coconuts

Let’s keep the coconuts really simple by just drawing three circles in the center of the leaves.

If you are making this in Procreate, you can make perfectly round circles by holding your pencil down at the end of the line, after you draw the circle.

The palm tree drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.

Coloring the Palm Tree Drawing

You’re ready to color your outline.

If you have gaps, zoom in and draw a new line to close the gap or erase and redraw the line.

Tap a color from the color wheel and then drag it to the section that you want to color. Make it fun by choosing bright colors.

Next, click on a section of the palm tree to fill it with color. 

Repeat this process to color in every section of the palm tree.

Your palm tree drawing is done! Wasn’t that easy!

If you drew the palm tree in Procreate like I did, you can export the image as a png file and then upload the image to a cutting machine and make print and cut designs for lots of craft projects.

  1. For the first step, make the trunk.
    Draw a curved line, then another curved line, and connect them with a small horizontal curved line.
  2. Draw a crosshatch design for the trunk on a new layer. To do this, add a new layer then redraw the trunk.
  3. To make the leaves, draw a line that starts at the top of the left side of the trunk, going away from the trunk to a point, and then back toward the middle. You want them to fan out.
  4. Draw three circles in the center of the leaves.

    Color Tips

    If you are making a digital drawing, make sure to close any gaps. This will make it easier to color the drawing using the color drop tool.
