Crafts to Make with Roses
The nice thing about digital drawings is that they can be easily transformed into physical drawings for lots of craft projects.
Here are some crafts that you can make with your rose drawing:
- Greeting cards
- Birth announcements
- Planner stickers
- Bookmarks
- Party invitations

Those are just a few of the many ideas for beginner crafts.
You don’t have to be limited to paper crafts either. If you have a Cricut machine, you can use the print and cut feature to make iron-on templates for t-shirts.
Another fun project is making vinyl decals.
The decals can be used with heat transfer vinyl or adhesive vinyl crafts. Adhesive Decals can be applied to hard surfaces like glass, metal, and wood.
Heat transfer decals can be applied to hard and semi-hard surfaces, like tumblers and even basketballs!

How to Draw a Rose for Beginners
Start by assembling your materials to draw the rose. I’ll be using Inkscape, an open-source graphic software program. There is even an online drawing app version of Inkscape.
Using the calligraphy and brush strokes tool, we’ll draw petals as the base of our flower.
Start on the left side and draw the first petal.
It will have a slight teardrop shape.
Calligraphy tool settings
- No preset
- Width: 3
- Thinning: 10
- Angle: 90
- Fixation: 30
- Caps: 0.75
- Tremor: 0
- Wiggle: 0
- Mass:2
Pro Tip: If you need help drawing the petal, draw the letter U, erase the right side of the U, draw a curved line from the top of the left side of the U to bottom of the right side.
See the picture below.

You can download the template to help you make the base of the rose.
Make a Rose Petal Shape
You now have your first rose petal shape on the left side.

The next step is to draw the second petal on the right side.
The petals will serve as the basis for making the rose.
Draw a Rose From Petals

You now have two petals. Follow the steps to draw the inner petals of the rosebud.
Once you draw in all of the petals, you can move on to the next step, drawing the stem.
Draw a Long Stemmed Rose

The flower petals are complete, let’s add the leaves to the bottom of the rosebud.
Draw the leaves in one piece.
Pro Tip: To make this step easier, draw 3 triangles and connect them.
If you only want the rosebud, you can skip the next step and move on to coloring the outline.
Draw the stem by making an irregular rectangle.
Draw a leaf. Again, think of making a teardrop shape on the left side of the stem.
Continue to draw leaves on each side of the stem.
Draw a thorn by making a triangular shape on the side of the stem.
Coloring the Rose Drawing

The outline is complete and you can now color your drawing of the rose.
To do this, I use the fill bucket tool (fill bounded areas tool).
It’s best to have the two rose petals as different colors. I’ll use red and pink.
Click the fill bucket tool and then click a petal and change its color. To do this, select any petal and click on a color from the color menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
Now choose the petal next to the red petal that you just colored.
Again, you can do this by clicking on the petal outline and clicking on a color from the color menu bar at the bottom.
Repeat this process to alternate the red and pink petals.
Use the same process to color the leaves, the stem, and the thorns.
Your beautiful rose drawing is done. Wasn’t that fun?!
Turn Drawing into an SVG Cut File
Want to take your digital drawing further?
You can upload your drawing to a cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette. Before you upload it, you’ll want to use the Union tool to attach all of the similar colors.
That way, you’ll only have 4 layers to cut instead of 46!
If you liked this simple flower drawing lesson, you’ll love my So Simple SVG Files course. I will walk you through the steps to make digital drawings using simple shapes.
You’ll also learn how to transfer your drawings to your craft projects and get better use from your cutting machine.
